Major Donors


The Royal Charter 2000 issued by His Majesty the Fourth King Jigme Singye Wangchuck formally established the Trust Fund as the Bhutan Health Trust Fund with a target of USD 24 million. With the initial contribution of USD 6,65,100.71 million from the Royal Government of Bhutan and USD 3,083,137.72 million from the developmental partners, around 42.98% of the BHTF capital target was achieved in June 2001. The fund consistently grew from USD 18.4 million in 2005 to USD 27.2 million in 2017, hence achieving the capital fund target.

With the vision to promote the quality of life of the people through the provision of primary health care services and to sustain the fund, a new fund target of BTN 3 billion was set in 2016. As of June 2020, BHTF's capital fund stands at BTN 3.084 billion.

Fund Performance History


The capital fund of BHTF has been growing consistently over the years from USD 18.4 million in 2005 to USD 27.2 million in 2017. The Royal Government of Bhutan, various developmental international organizations, governments of different countries and individual donors have contributed to the fund. In 2018, the Royal Government of Bhutan (RGOB) contributed Nu 500 million equivalent to USD 7.5 million. The contribution mirrors the RGoB commitment to provide matching support under the one-to-one partnership agreement, for the forthcoming ADB’s support of USD 10 Million as part of sustaining primary health care services in Bhutan. The current target is to increase the capital fund to Nu. 3 billion.
